I have made it my mission to master public speaking.

When I was young I experienced a lot of anxiety around public speaking. I would purposefully hide from the world so that I didn't have to interact with people. A lot of the fears about public speaking stem from our fear of being judged and criticized by others.

Over the years I've done a lot of work to overcome my fear of public speaking. Today, I speak in front of thousands of people and have created a brand that is focused on sharing my message with the world. As a result, I've been able to impact millions of people. I am living proof that the fear of public speaking doesn't have to control your life.

I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Roger Love about how to master public speaking. He has over 30 years of vocal coaching experience and has helped thousands of people find their voice, some of whom include Oscar, Screen Actors Guild, and Grammy Award winners.

Now is the time to conquer your public speaking fears once and for all. Let's dive in!

What can people do to be more effective in communicating with emotion?

There are some really simple things. When you listen to music, some songs make you happy, others make you cry, and others make you reminisce about the first time that you fell in love. Music is instinctive. It makes you feel things. I spent a lot of years as a singing coach. I took everything that music could offer and I created a way of putting music into the speaking voice. For example, songs have a melody. They go up sometimes and they go down sometimes.

However, when people speak they often hang onto the same note.

gThey are Mr. or Mrs. monotone. That is the most unemotional sound you can make. Despire this, did you know that about 85% of the speakers in the world speak with one to two notes, max? Melody is important. Not just any melody, but specific melodies.

In a song, when the notes go from lows to highs, it makes you happy and when it goes from highs to lows, it makes you sad. The same thing goes in speaking. Whenever we get to a comma or a period, we are taught to go down. Simple changes in realizing how you can add more melody to your voice can make a world of difference. If you change your speaking voice slightly, everybody will think you are amazing as opposed to thinking that you're boring.

Do you have any tips to help people overcome the fear of public speaking and become a confident speaker?

It's crazy that fear of speaking in public is still the #1 fear in America. The main reason why people are afraid to speak in public is that they don't like the sound of their voice. They are afraid that people are going to judge them as harshly as they judge themselves.

We don't want to be judged because it hurts when someone doesn't like us.

The way to conquer fear is to create a voice that shows people how special and intelligent you are and how much you care. When people hear you, they won't judge you harshly. Rather, they will love listening to you. If you sound more confident, people will perceive you as a confident speaker.

Are there things that people can do to ensure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared to speak at their best?

If I was a running coach and the runner asked me, “What should I do before the race to win it?” I would tell them that they have to stretch a little. I have simple little vocal warmups that you could do in 1-2 minutes that tell your vocal cords what position they should be in so that you can make big and intelligent sounds. This is very similar to stretching.

What are some of the mistakes that people make when it comes to speaking and communicating?

People are afraid of volume. We've associated volume with anger. If you speak loud, people naturally back off because they assume that you are threatening them. However, volume isn't the culprit. Sounds and emotions don't just have one element.

Volume is an element of being mad, but monotone is also an element of being mad.

If I'm loud and I only have one note, I do sound mad. However, if I'm loud and I have a lot of melodies, I sound passionate. If you add more melody to volume, all of a sudden you will sound more full, rich and strong. Volume is great. Use more of it!

Can you share a little bit about the Speaking Pro program that you created?

My Speaking Pro program is the culmination of what I've learned over the last 30 years and more. I've tried to isolate all of the different situations people might be in where they need their voice. The videos in my program teach you all of the things that you need to know about communicating, whether you're a professional speaker or not. Everyone needs to learn how to communicate emotionally and in a way that builds self-confidence.

You can master public speaking.

If I can do it, so can you. It is important to remember that public speaking is a skill. Mastering any skill takes deliberate practice, time, and persistence. If you are committed to the process, I promise that you will become a more confident speaker and communicator.

The world is waiting for your message. Are you ready to start flexing your vocal muscles?

Public speaking is a learnable skill.

I used to struggle with public speaking. When I was in high school I was very shy. I had a very hard time making friends so I would isolate myself and play video games all day. Whenever I had to give a presentation in front of my class I would skip and take the fail if it meant that I wouldn't have to speak.

Every time that I spoke to someone I would experience debilitating anxiety. Luckily, the pain that I associated with public speaking became a gift. It gave me the motivation to change my life. I wouldn’t be the successful speaker who I am today if I hadn’t worked through my fear of public speaking.

Today, I speak at small and large events, some of which have included up to 2000 people. I also lead masterminds, host workshops, and have been able to impact millions of people around the world through my YouTube channel. I’m not the best speaker in the world, but I’ve improved a lot and I want the same for you.

4 Tips For Becoming A Confident Public Speaker

It is possible to develop your public speaking skills to the point where you become a master communicator. I know it feels scary and hard, but like anything, it will get easier with time. It starts and ends with committing to developing yourself. Below are 4 tips for how you can become a confident public speaker.

1. Know your “why” for speaking

When it comes to public speaking, 80% of communication is your why for speaking, and only 20% is the how. Most people focus on the 20%. They focus too much on the words that they speak. If you watch my YouTube videos, you will notice that my words aren't always smooth. I still make mistakes and stumble from time to time.

However, I’m not concerned because I focus my energy on the 80%. This is the emotion associated with what I am speaking about. When you talk about something important to you, it becomes so much easier to articulate the message with ease. A speech isn’t the thing that changes people's lives.

Rather, it’s your ability to influence people, to the point that you inspire them to take action.  When I communicate, I want you to feel the message behind my words. My goal is for you to always walk away from my content feeling motivated and empowered.

2. Know your audience

Once you know your why for speaking, you want to ask yourself, “Who am I communicating with?” You want to know who your audience is and what their needs are. The more that you care about your audience, the more effective that you will be in serving them.

All too often, people make a speech about themselves. When you self-obsess, your mental chatter takes away from your message. The purpose of speaking is to influence your audience. This is what allows you to get out of your head and drop into your heart.

3. Put yourself into a resourceful state

Before you speak, you want to be at a level 10, meaning that you want to be at your best. I like to listen to empowering music to get myself into a resourceful state. It does a great job of preventing my mind from wandering.

When I'm preparing for a big speech, I'll work with Roger Love, who is a celebrity voice coach. He's got an amazing course that I recommend, which is called, The Perfect Voice. If you purchase it, you can save $50 by using my coupon code, “MASTERY” on checkout.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

The more that you practice public speaking, the better that you will get. The best thing that you can do is have an audience that you can practice in front of. If you are committed to developing your public speaking skills, I recommend that you join Toastmasters. I joined this organization when I was 18 years old.

Groups like this will give you the feedback and support that you need in order to become a better public speaker. Another thing to consider is taking improv or acting classes. It's challenging but it will force you to get out of your comfort zone.

Lastly, I encourage you to film yourself speaking so that you can observe your verbal and non-verbal language. Doing so will help improve your confidence, your speaking skills, and your comfort with filming future videos. The end goal is self-improvement, and you will always win when you're focused on that.

These are 4 tips for how you can become a confident public speaker.

You have the power to master the art of public speaking. Your message matters and the world is waiting for it. Are you ready to become a confident public speaker?

Travel is the best form of education.

Traveling has always been a huge part of my personal growth. As many of you know who follow me, I'm a big fan of self-development. Traveling forces you to get outside your comfort zone and explore new cultures, languages, perspectives, and people. The entire experience of traveling allows you to see and appreciate different ways of living and being.

I've never met anyone in my life who said that they regret traveling. It's a win-win, even when you encounter challenges along the way. For this reason alone, I believe that traveling is one of the best things that you can do to get to know yourself, others, and the world at large on a deeper level.

The reason why I'm able to travel, work and make money is that I've built a successful online business. My business provides consistent passive income every single hour of the day. Hence, I'm not trading my time for money. This means that I can run and operate my business from anywhere in the world. All I really need is my camera, laptop, phone, and WiFi access.

From personal experience, I can say that having this kind of freedom has been life-changing. The beautiful part of it all is that ANYBODY can create a laptop lifestyle. Perhaps the most dominant influence of the evolution of the Internet has been the creation of new jobs and a change in the nature of jobs that already exist.

Today there are limitless opportunities for you to create life, on your terms.

You don't have to be confined to a 9-to-5 office job or be tied down to one location. You can be location independent. Imagine how your life would be if you could work from anywhere in the world, and make money doing it? If I did it, there's no reason why you can't do it too.

We are so blessed to live on this incredible planet. There is so much to see and do. I don't know about you, but I don't want to come to the end of my life and feel like I missed out. At the end of your life, you won't remember the days when all you did was go to work. Rather, you will remember the magic moments when you stepped outside of your comfort zone and took that epic trip that you always dreamed of.

I'm originally from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. There was a time in my life when I was living in downtown Vancouver in a beautiful penthouse, yet I still didn't feel fulfilled. Why? Well, eight months out of the year the weather was lousy. Don't get me wrong… Vancouver is amazing but a lot of the great stuff to do in that city is outdoors. When it's raining all of the time, people don't want to go outside and socialize.

This lifestyle felt really limiting. I was too comfortable. Can you relate?

I was craving an escape so I started traveling to tropical locations during the winter months. The biggest things that I love about traveling is the variety and adventure that it brings. It provides a huge amount of excitement and passion in my life. If I'm going to work, I may as well work poolside, looking out at the beach! There is so much more fun to be had in new destinations because everything is new.

However, there are some challenges that come with traveling the world. Firstly, when you travel to a new destination every week or month, you're constantly on the move which can cause you to feel ungrounded. There's always an adaptation phase that you need to go through. Although this can be exciting, it can also be exhausting.

Time zone changes and jetlag can negatively affect your daily routine. I've gotten a lot better at managing this, but it's still something I'm trying to master. In order to combat this challenge and connect back with comfort and familiarity, I travel back to my 3 home bases, which are Panama, LA, and Vancouver when I feel called to.

Another challenge with traveling is living out of a suitcase. When I travel I try to be a minimalist in terms of how much I bring. However, there are times when I wish that I had more at my disposal. I'm a big fan of biohacking so I really enjoy having my technology with me. However, I can't always bring those things with me. Also, if you are someone who loves to eat healthy and organic food, sometimes it takes time to find high vibe food options in certain countries. This is why I like to hire a chef or find meal delivery services when I visit a new place.

The last challenge of traveling is feeling disconnected from your social network.

When you travel consistently, it's hard to maintain solid friendships. Luckily, my  fiancée, Tatiana and I have one another when we travel, but we still miss our friends. You can still make new friends when you travel, but a lot of those friendships are short-term. Hence, you miss out on the depth of connection that comes with having your tribe. This is why traveling can feel lonely at times, especially if you work alone.

This isn't how I want to live for the rest of my life. Rather, it's just a stage and that' s great! I've been grinding and hustling for years now to build my 7-figure online business. Today, I'm in a stage of pleasure and enjoyment. I want to enjoy the freedom that comes with living a laptop lifestyle. I know that I'll look back at this time and have zero regrets. Trust me when I say that the advantages of traveling the world far exceed the challenges.

This is what it's REALLY like traveling the world.

If you have the desire to travel the world while making money, don't wait until tomorrow or the next day to take action.  Close your eyes and visualize the kind of life that you want. Now open your eyes and start creating your reality today!

A Mastermind Group has the power to change every area of your life.

For those of you who don't know, a Mastermind Group is a small, intimate group of like-minded people who are committed to pursuing and achieving a similar goal.

Who you surround yourself with is who you become. It is one of the most important decisions that you can make.

Your environment literally shapes your entire life. As the late great, Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Are you ready to learn how you can create a Mastermind Group and surround yourself with success?

Do you surround yourself with successful people?

Think about your close circle of friends. Do these people inspire you to achieve greatness or do they drag you down and leave you feeling unmotivated? If it's the latter, it's time to re-evaluate your friendships.

In his new book, Big Potential: How Transforming the Pursuit of Success Raises Our Achievement, Happiness, and Well-Being, happiness researcher Shawn Achor says that the people around us matter. He explains how any of us can create a “star system” of people who help us reach our potential in life. In his words, “The height of your potential is predicted by the people you surround yourself with.”

Make it a priority to surround yourself with people who hold you to a higher standard than you hold yourself. It's always uncomfortable being around others who are smarter than you. However, this is what will help you raise your game and level up your life. In my experience, the best to maximize your success is by being a part of a Mastermind Group.

The Mastermind Group concept was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book, Think and Grow Rich. Hill described the Mastermind principle as, “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony.” A Mastermind Group is like having your own personal board of advisors. You may meet up with this group, either in-person or virtually, on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. The purpose of this meeting is to support and help one another reach your personal and professional goals.

For example, let's say that you are trying to build an online business.

You will probably find that this is a hard thing to do on your own. By being a part of a Mastermind Group, you can share and leverage one another's experiences. If there are ten people in a group who are on the same path as you are, all of a sudden you get access to ten different skillsets. Group members may notice things in yourself that you may not even be aware of.

In your meetings, you can share challenges, insights, and ask for feedback on how you can reach the next level in your development. How valuable is that? In a Mastermind Group session, there is something called a mastermind hot seat. This is where you get 20 minutes to be in the spotlight and present your challenge, goal or a question that you have to the group members. The job of the group members is to give you all of their time, attention, focus and expertise. Your job is to merely listen, take notes, and be open to receiving their feedback.

A Mastermind Group has changed my life in so many ways. I'm a part of several different groups comprised of high-level, like-minded entrepreneurs. A path-breaking new study on how we seek similarity in relationships upends the idea that “opposites attract.” Instead, it suggests that we’re drawn to people who are like-minded. The networks and relationships that I've been able to build from the groups that I am a part of have accelerated my business growth dramatically.

If you have expertise in a given area, you can make a profit from your masterminding efforts.

For example, Tatiana and I facilitate two mastermind events per year called, The Online Business Mastery Mastermind. This is for business owners who want to build their businesses and receive mentorship from both of us. This group meets once a week and receives the accountability that they need in order to continue making progress on their goals. It's one of my favorite things to do. I get to work with my best clients and create long-lasting friendships with them. I've actually ended up hiring and working with some of my clients through a Mastermind Group.

If you are an influencer, coach, speaker or author, that means that you have followers who would pay you money for your expertise. You can build a profitable business doing this. People will pay more money for in-person experiences than they will for YouTube videos or courses. People want to be a part of networks like this.

If you don't have an area of expertise, you can still turn a Mastermind Group into a business by acting as a facilitator. Reach out to influencers, coaches, speakers or authors and ask them if they have a Mastermind Group. If they don't, organize one for them! You would handle all of the logistics and organize the Mastermind Group for an expert in a specific niche. You and the expert would work out a revenue split, based on the value that you provide.

Lastly, you could join a Mastermind Group just for the sake of reaping the benefits.

For example, let's say that you want to build a personal training business. You could find other personal trainers that have already encountered the same challenges that you may be going through and create a Mastermind Group with them. It's easier than ever before to create a group like this. The Internet has provided such an easy way for us to connect with one other.

Join Facebook groups, find people on YouTube or on Instagram and reach out to them. Tell them that you're putting together a group of ten other personal trainers and that the purpose of this group will be to help each other build your businesses. A lot of personal trainers would love this idea! Being in a group of like-minded people who are moving towards the same goal is invaluable.

Make it a priority to surround yourself with success.

The most successful people surround themselves with successful people. It's that simple. Create an empowering environment to support your goals and long-term vision. Creating a Mastermind Group is one of the most powerful ways that you can to accelerate your success in life. Are you ready to start masterminding?

Roger Love is Hollywood's go-to guy.

It's fair to say that there is no voice coach in history that has been more successful than he has. Not only has he brought his expert vocal techniques and voice coaching skills to performers, but he has also trained top corporate executives and entrepreneurs. On top of all of that, he's also a best-selling author.

When I was younger I was extremely shy and lacking in self-confidence. I didn't have a voice, nor did I know how to find it. Unfortunately, this meant that I didn't know how to communicate with anyone.

I first came across Roger Love's work through Tony Robbins' Get The Edge program when I was 19 years old. I purchased Roger's Set Your Voice program and I started to practice vocal exercises every single day. After a lot of hard work, I was able to overcome my fear of public speaking.

I think we can all agree that being able to effectively communicate with others is critical to success in life. Study after study shows that effective communicators have longer marriages, deeper friendships, better relationships, make more money, and are generally happier than their less articulate counterparts.

Here is a sneak peek of my interview with Roger, where we talk about how you can find and master your voice.

How did you become the #1 vocal coach in the world?

That has a good ring to it, doesn't it? I can't fit all of that on a license plate, but maybe around the rim. When I was 16 years old, my voice teacher went away to Canada to teach a masterclass. There was no one to take over the studio. He said, “Hey Roger, do you want to come over and teach a few lessons?”

I said, “Well, that sounds great. Although I am a good student, I don't think that I can teach.” He told me that he would pay me $100 per hour. I said, “I can't wait to be there.”

I showed up on my first day not knowing how to actually teach.

My first lesson was with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I then went on to teach Earth, Wind and Fire, The Jacksons, and Stevie Wonder. All these amazing supergroups. Six months later when he came back all of his students wanted to keep working with me.

I realized that I had a way of listening to the sounds that were coming out of people's mouths, and then making them better. Since then, I've spent my life working with singers and eventually speakers. My work is designed to teach people how to open up their mouths and make incredible sounds so that they can create the life that they want.

What are some of the biggest mistakes that you notice people make when they speak? What can they do to improve their speaking voice?

Those of you who are reading this right now probably think that you were born with the voice that you have. We were all born with an instrument, but we didn't learn how to use it. However old you are right now, you can decide how you want to sound.

You can take the voice that you were born with and polish it up.

The biggest mistake is thinking that the sounds that are coming out of your mouth are the only sounds that you can make. That's just like saying that somebody gave me a piano but only one note is tuned.

Can you talk a little bit about the importance of breathing?

Most people breathe with their mouths open. This is called accessory breathing and is the way to get the least amount of air into the lungs. If you want to sound great and have an amazing voice, you have to control how air comes out.

You should be closing your lips and breathing in through your nose. From there, you want to pretend that you have a balloon in your tummy, and then speak while your stomach is coming back in. This is called diaphragmatic breathing. When you do this, you have more volume, melody, and tone. You sound stronger and more self-confident.

What makes a voice attractive?

An attractive voice is one that moves people emotionally. When we speak, we are supposed to showcase our emotions, and then we are supposed to make other people feel those exact emotions. Unfortunately, a lot of people do things that get in the way of this.

If you only speak with one note, otherwise known as monotone, you are going to bore the heck out of people.

This means that you aren't showing any changes in your emotions, which is reflected in your pitch, volume, pace, melody, and/or tone. I believe that we were all born singing. However, at some point, we took the music out and are left sounding flat. My job is to put the music back into people's speaking voices so that they sound emotional. Doing so allows them to bring out the emotions of those that they speak to.

After working with all of these incredible people, what are some of the common factors that you've noticed that make them great performers?

The first thing to realize is that almost every great performer is an introvert. They are just as scared as everyone else about getting up and speaking or singing in front of the public. I would say 99.7% of all of the most famous people that I've worked with are introverts.

They get into acting because they are shy. Acting allows them to pretend that they are other characters. I think that it's fantastic to be an introvert. They are the most creative and imaginative people in this world. However, you have to be able to find a switch somehow. By doing this, you at least get sound out in a way that moves people emotionally.

Are there certain rituals that these people engage in that allow them to put on their best performance?

The common variable amongst all of them is practice. Most people don't sound great because they haven't practiced being great. They haven't learned the right techniques. My techniques are simple. Get rid of some pressure, change the way you breathe, and then practice a lot. When you do that, the rest falls into place.

Bradley Cooper came to my studio at 7:30 every single morning, 5 days per week for months.

This is after he had already driven 30 miles from where he lived after working out for 90 minutes. He was never late. The greatest performers and speakers work hard at what they are passionate about. The joy of what happens on the other end is so worth it.

Do you mind sharing a little bit about some of the exercises that you give to people to help them improve their voice?

People need a daily vocal warmup practice. This is why I created what I call “The Vocal Warmups.” These are exercises that you can practice for a few minutes every day, a few times per week. These exercises will change the way that you take air in and out of your body and change the way that your vocal cords work. People will start listening to you, hiring you for jobs, and wanting to go out with you. All you did is change the way that you sounded.

Can you share with people a little bit about your program, “The Perfect Voice?”

The absolute best way to get your voice from where it is to where it needs to be is to go through my Perfect Voice collection program. Doing so will allow you to have better communication, influence, and overall quality of life. I have spent years trying to figure out what is the greatest information that I can give you in the shortest period of time so that you are learning exactly what you need to know.

It will allow you to speak better the very day that you learn about it!

The Perfect Voice includes all of the secrets that I teach to famous celebrities. I've packaged it into something that you can use to make a better life for yourself. It's super affordable so there is no excuse not to get it. Your life will change because your voice will change.

Are you ready for a voice makeover?

I highly recommend that you check out Roger's program. My personal life and my work have benefitted from it in so many ways. Finding and mastering your voice has the power to change your life. I believe in Roger's work so much that I have recently hired him to be my personal vocal coach. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

When you find your voice, your entire world opens up. In the words of Stephen Covey, “Once you've found your own voice, the choice to expand your influence, to increase your contribution, is the choice to inspire others to find their voice.”

Communication skills are important in every aspect of our lives.

Almost all of us engage in some form of communication every single day. In simplest terms, communication is the act of transferring information from one person or place to another.

People communicate in order to facilitate the spread of knowledge and share messages with one another. However, because people have different communication styles, sometimes conflict can ensue.

A recent survey found that more than 80 percent of employees indicated that miscommunication occurred in their organization very frequently, frequently, or occasionally.

It’s never too late to become a master communicator.  Are you ready to learn 3 ways to improve your communication skills?

Effective communication skills are critical to success in life.

I learned this the hard way. I didn't always know how to communicate.

Back in high school, I used to be painfully shy. I was the quiet kid that didn’t have many friends. Most people didn’t even know that I existed because I would sit in the corner of the room. I did my best to avoid as many social scenarios as I possibly could.

Sure enough, people would tease me and make fun of me because I was different. I was a perfect target because I appeared weak. I wanted all of the things in life that required to be an effective communicator, so I dove into the world of self-development. I did the work to improve my communication skills. Eventually, I coached and helped other people develop this skill in themselves.

From my work, I found that there are many different types of communication skills. Don’t think that you have to be the most talkative person out there in order to be seen. A lot of people worry too much about the words that they are speaking. In my eyes, that’s not what makes a great communicator. Oftentimes, it's the people that try too hard to stand out that are the most insecure.

Success requires that you cultivate different communication skills at different times, depending on the person you are talking to and the environment in which you find yourself in. The more you know about these skills, the more effective you can be in communicating your points, as well as in understanding what others are trying to communicate to you.

Let’s talk about 3 ways that you can improve your communication skills:

1. Develop Your Confidence

The greatest communicators possess unwavering confidence in themselves and their abilities. They don’t say the perfect words at the perfect time. However, they have congruence, which is alignment between what you say and believe.

When great communicators speak, you can feel the energy behind their words. A big part of that confidence comes from their competence.

I used to spend all day and night in front of my computer. I had to rid myself of all my video games and force myself to go out into the real world and practice my communication skills. The truth is that I was painfully nervous and anxious about doing it. However, if I wanted to be successful, I knew that I had to reframe my fear.

I'm a big believer that if you aren’t feeling fear, then you aren’t growing.

I embrace new challenges and purposefully find scenarios that scare the shit out of me. Sounds crazy, right? Not really. This is how you develop true confidence. The best way to overcome fear is by embracing it. That is how you become the kind of person that can communicate in any environment.

Research by Russian developmental Psychologist Lev Vygotsky suggests that, in order to keep growing, you must keep moving into your ever-shifting Zone of Proximal Development. This is the area between one's comfort zone and the frustration zone, where optimal learning takes place.

2. Develop Nonverbal Communication

In 1971 a man by the name of Albert Mehrabian published a book called, Silent Messages: Implicit Communication of Emotions and Attitudes, where he discusses his research on nonverbal communication. From his study, he concludes that prospects based their assessments of credibility on factors other than the words a salesperson spoke — 55 percent of their weight was assigned to the speaker's body language and another 38 percent to the tone of their voice.

Here's the kicker… only 7 percent of their credibility assessment was given to the salesperson's actual words.

A lot of people focus on words, but the reality is that it’s not that important. It’s not what you say; rather, it’s how you say it. Two people can say the exact same thing, but it will come across completely different based on how they express it.

This reflects the importance of nonverbal communication. There’s always two types of communication that are occurring between two people or a group of people – surface level communication and sub-communication. Whereas surface level communication is the literal meaning of words, sub-communication is the hidden messages that are behind words.

When you are in a conversation with someone:

  • What is the tone of your voice like?
  • What facial gestures do you make?
  • How do you position your body?
  • How do you dress?

These are important questions to ask yourself because nonverbal behavior is a powerful tool that can help you connect with and influence others. People will judge you, based on how you look, stand, move, and communicate. This is why you need to pay attention to the small details.

You can always spot a truly confident and credible person based on the body language habits that they possess. They have a strong handshake, they stand tall, with their shoulders back, and they look you in the eye when are talking to you.

3. Practice Active Listening

Most people would agree that active listening is important. However, not everyone feels a strong desire to develop this skill. One of the most common complaints in any relationship conflict that arises is the issue of not feeling heard.

In the words of Stephen Covey, “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

A lot of people think that they are good listeners, but many are not. The issue comes down to not really knowing what active listening is. Listening is when another person is talking and you are just standing in the room and listening. You may be thinking about something else. If you are always in your head, others will pick up on that energy.

By contrast, active listening involves fully engaging in and absorbing what someone else is saying to you. It’s about being present. Always make an effort to acknowledge and appreciate others when they are speaking to you. When this happens, a deeper level of connection can be experienced between two people.

Why is it so difficult to actively listen?

Well, part of it is because we have been conditioned to move throughout our lives with a busy mindsetWe are always in our heads and constantly thinking about the next place that we need to be. As a result, we are barely able to show up for ourselves, let alone others.

Everyone wants to feel heard. When you communicate with others, give them the gift of your full attention and presence. Listen for the meaning behind their words, reflect back what they are saying, ask open-ended questions and have empathy by putting yourself in their shoes.

If you catch your mind wandering, do the work to bring yourself back. Keep in mind that this is a skill that takes time and practice to develop. Don’t expect to be a communication expert overnight.

This is how you improve communication skills.

You can read all the books on communication skills, but if you don’t actually practice and do the work, you won’t make any progress. In my opinion, communication skills are critical to success in life, which is why it’s imperative that you make it a priority to develop them.

Paul Meyer said it best – “Communication – the human connection – is the key to personal and career success.” How can you communicate better in your personal and professional relationships?

PERFECTIONISTS: STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT! https://projectlifemastery.com/stop-trying-to-be-perfect/ https://projectlifemastery.com/stop-trying-to-be-perfect/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 15:00:06 +0000 https://projectlifemastery.com/?p=8007 Perfectionism is the fast track to an unhappy life. Discover 6 reasons why you need to stop trying to be perfect and connect back to who you really are!

The post PERFECTIONISTS: STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT! appeared first on Project Life Mastery.

Do you want to know the key to finding true happiness in life? Stop trying to be perfect.

Perfectionism can permeate every area of our lives, leaving us feeling exhausted, drained, and defeated. When is enough, good enough? It's not totally our fault. We live in a world where we are consumed with images of perfection that lead us to create unrealistic expectations of ourselves.

In our search to be accepted and acknowledged for who we are, we become so obsessed with getting things “perfect.” We work harder and achieve more, but more is never enough.

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with working hard to achieve your goals in life, but there comes a point when overachievement kicks in and you start to lose yourself in the process. In the words of Maria Shriver, “Perfectionism doesn't make you feel perfect. It makes you feel inadequate.”

Having the courage to let go of your perfectionist behaviors is one of the most empowering things that you can do. Are you ready to stop trying to be perfect? You may not know it yet, but you already are perfect.

Stop trying to be perfect. It could be preventing you from success.

Research suggests that anxiety over making mistakes may ultimately be holding some perfectionists back from ever achieving success in the first place. Here's the tricky thing about perfection… it can be easily confused with striving for high standards of achievement. But there is a difference.

Striving for excellence motivates you to achieve more. It acts as your cheerleader, who nourishes your self-esteem and reminds you that you are enough. Conversely, perfectionism is like a bully who leaves you feeling defeated and drained. It reminds you that nothing is good enough and that you have to constantly prove your worth to the world in order to feel successful. Which mode of living do you operate by?

If it's perfectionism, this mode of living could be seriously holding you back. Perfection does not exist, so stop letting it run your life. When you stop trying to be perfect and instead strive for improvement, you give yourself permission to focus on what is working well, versus what is not working. Drop the unrealistic expectations. This mindset will only cause you to have unnecessary stress, anxiety, and fear of failure.

How would your life change if you were able to stop being your own worst enemy and drop your perfectionist behaviors? Now is the time to make a shift. Let's explore 6 reasons why you need to stop trying to be perfect.

1. It's Not Possible

If you are striving for perfection, stop! Why? Because you are trying to achieve something that doesn’t exist. The desire for perfection is an epidemic that inflicts a lot of people. In one's search for a perfect existence, they become disillusioned and unable to live in the present moment.

In today's world, everything is in a constant state of change. If you think that something is perfect today, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will still be perfect tomorrow. The world is far from perfect, so why are you trying to perfect too?

In his book, The Dutiful Worrier: How to Stop Compulsive Worry Without Feeling Guilty, author Elliot Cohen says, “You can't have perfection in an imperfect world…when someone demands perfection, either with themselves or with others, they create frustration for all involved.” When we are able to accept our imperfections and fully embrace who we are, our lives become more inspiring and joyous. In the words of Abby Covert, “Perfection isn't possible, but progress is.”

2. It Diminishes Your Self-Worth

I challenge you to find me a perfectionist that has high self-esteem. It doesn't go hand in hand. People who have high self-esteem will encourage themselves to grow, but they also accept that life isn't perfect, that they will make mistakes in life, and that that's OK. Conversely, a perfectionist sets unrealistic expectations of themselves, and when they don't reach them, they punish themselves.

Perfectionism is a self-esteem crusher. It feeds your inner critic, who constantly reminds you that you aren't enough. According to a recent study, the perfectionist’s need to meet unattainable standards of excellence can lead to depression and anxiety if their results don’t meet their expectations.

Did you talk to yourself like you would talk to a good friend? If the answer is no, you need to stop trying to be perfect. I encourage you to start integrating self-compassion exercises into your morning ritual. Don't define your worth based on how perfect you can be. Be kind to yourself and love your human-ness. We are all imperfectly flawed in our own way.

3. It Decreases Your Productivity

Perfectionists have an all-or-nothing mindset. Do you always question whether or not your work is good enough? Do you worry that you will make mistakes and be rejected by others if you don't do the “best” job possible? If so, perfectionism may be holding you back from achieving your goals.

Oftentimes, many high achieving people don't even know that they are perfectionists because they define their behavior as going “above and beyond.”

Wrong.

Sure, it's great to value hard work, but there comes a point when you are in danger of becoming a perfectionist. Stop trying to be perfect because it is killing your productivity. It will also stifle your chances of success in life.

A great way to overcome perfectionism is to implement the 80/20 rule into your work. This rule states that 80% of your results are coming from 20% of your effort. Hence, the more time and effort that you put into procrastinating, the less productive you will be. Continue to do great work, but adopt the mindset that done is better than perfect, or else you will never achieve the results that you desire.

4. It Makes You Unhappy

Procrastination has the potential to disrupt every area of your life. It's hard to feel happy in life when you are constantly dissatisfied with everything that you do. If we aren't moving forward in life we are stuck, and that's a zone that a lot of procrastinators are familiar with. Stop trying to be perfect, because it could be killing your happiness.

The Procrastination Research Group, run by Timothy A. Pychyl, interviewed over 10,000 people in a survey and found that 94% of them confessed that procrastination indeed takes away some piece of their happiness. Why? Because procrastinators tend to live with a lot of regrets, which fuels a vicious cycle of stress, shame, and self-criticism.

Here's the good news. Happiness is a choice. You have the power to choose how you feel, and whether you want to believe it or not, procrastination is a voluntary behavior that transforms into a bad habit. Like any habit, it is up to you to change it. Stop suffering and start taking back control of your life and your time.

5. It Is A Time Killer

When a task has no solid due date, a perfectionist can get caught in the deadly trap of information overload, where time stands still and indecision reigns supreme. Being a hard worker is a great quality, but when it starts to waste your precious time, you need to re-assess your behavior. Are you wasting your time in the hopes of achieving perfection?

If you want to learn how to effectively manage your time and your life, you have to stop trying to be perfect and waiting for “the right time” to take action. In our desire to make our work perfect, we become overly critical and end up spending hours on one project. STOP. When we obsess over details, that is when we end up making more mistakes.

You will achieve more if you set a timer, put in a good amount of effort on one task, and then move on! You can always go back and make it better, but you need to remember that the most effective use of your time is knowing the point at which you need to stop thinking actually start doing something.

6. It Feeds Your Fear of Failure

The root of all procrastination is fear of failure. What many of us don't realize is that fear is something that our mind creates, which means that it isn't real even though we perceive it to be so. Perfectionism is a fear-based thought pattern that tries to trick us into believing that we aren't good enough.

When people fear failure, they stay in their comfort zones. To a perfectionist, that means never finishing anything because doing so would mean that they are taking the risk of failing. They continue to put off what it is that they need to do and end up falling farther into a procrastination hole. Guess what is down there? Not a hell of a lot.

Is it possible to overcome the fear of failure and procrastination? Yes. It starts with taking action. There is no perfect moment to do something. Rather, you just need to dive in and trust yourself. If you wait, your fearful mind will start playing tricks on you, and fool you into believing that you don't have what it takes. You need to understand that making mistakes is a normal part of life. If you fall, take the opportunity to learn from it, and move forward. Once you adopt this mindset, your fear of failure will take a back to seat to the achievement of your goals and dreams.

Dale Carnegie said it best, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” It's time to stop trying to be perfect. What are you waiting for?

Life is a lot more enjoyable when you stop trying to be perfect.

It can be hard to give up being a perfectionist. We get sucked into the belief that, if we master perfection, we have mastered life. This fantasy is so far from true. It takes a lot of work to give up being perfect, but the payoff is so worth it.

At first, it may feel overwhelming to make such a huge mindset shift. But being a procrastinator is a bad habit, and any habit can be changed, with commitment, consistency, and hard work. Don't limit your potential and be someone that you're not in order to please everyone else. Be comfortable with who you are and live in alignment with your truth.

Now is the time to stop trying to be perfect. The quest for perfection is a long, arduous, and painful road that leads nowhere. In the words of Robert Hillyer, “Perfectionism is a dangerous state of mind that in an imperfect world.” No matter how hard that you try, you will never be perfect. You may not know it just yet, but you are perfect just the way that you are.

If you've been stuck in a never-ending cycle of perfectionist behavior, now is the time to take back control of your life. What is one thing that you can commit to doing today that will help you stop trying to be perfect?

Here is a sneak peek of my interview with Eli Wilde, where we talk about how to master influence.

Do you mind sharing a little bit about yourself and how you got into the world of self-development world?

My journey began as a young boy who grew up in a tough household. I was a really quiet kid because I was so shut down, so I didn't start speaking until I was 4 or 5 years old. Even throughout high school, I was voted the quietest person in school. I make up for it now though because these days I never shut up!

I experienced a lot of trauma as a child, which created a lot of fear, but I was able to develop heightened powers of observation.

When people go through challenging times in their lives, sometimes they create exterior personas or internal references to psychology that help them cope with outside world. One of the elements that I mastered from an early age was something that Tony calls, “enhanced sensory acuity.”

Sometimes this can be fear-based, where somebody thinks that someone is dangerous and becomes hypersensitive to aspects of his/her tonality. I lived so much of my younger years in my head, that I found that I was ineffective at feeling the way that I wanted to feel because I didn't have a vision for my life.

Once I learned some core self-development tools I became more conscious of what is possible and took those powers of observation into my communication, One of the phrases that I go back to over and over again that is an NLP phrase; “The quality of our life comes down to the quality of our communication.”

Through self-development, I learned how to master influence. I found that I could use this sensory acuity superpower that I had to influence an environment, a person, or a company so that I could create resources outside of myself that were directed towards an outcome that I desired.

As they say, “necessity is the power of invention.” I found that, when I got into trouble, there were situations that I could get out of using the power of my own two lips. The most successful products, services or people in the world are able to affect someone else's state.

That's what I did, and of course, Tony Robbins was a huge mentor for me in that process. I have maintained an authentic curiosity with peoples’ internal drives. I'm fascinated why people do what they do – what creates their behavior and their results. I want to help people get more resourceful, not just with their money or their time, but also with their internal resources, like emotion.

The history of the world is the history of emotion. Something is always driving people's behaviors, and your ability to understand the driving force of that, is the pathway to everything. As they say in sales training, if you can clearly articulate someone’s problems back to them, in a better way than they can explain it to themselves, people will consciously give you permission to solve their problems. That is how to master influence.

You get in the habit of reading people's’ patterns, and I believe that this is Tony’s best skill. Pattern recognition is the skill of all masters. Everything has a strategy. When we view it that way, it takes out of the realm of, “This is something that I am.”

Identity is the strongest force in a person’s human psyche. I would never say to a child, “Johnny, you are bad.” Rather, I would say, “Johnny, you are amazing, but your behavior is not reflective of you.”

It's all about separating behavior from identity so that we can strive to make changes to behavior while empowering one’s identity. We are all just big kids who fall into patterns of behavior that sometimes make us less resourceful or effective.

We teach a lot of things in self-development about self-confidence and being self-empowered, but if someone is in a relationship of any kind, and they are only there for themselves, people will feel that versus if you show up for a community or humanity at large. Because your intent is bigger, that means that your vision is bigger, which increases your presence. You need to put yourself into an internal state that is bigger than a given moment.

What’s your mindset around how to influence people?

I believe that selling is serving and it's a great skill for anybody to learn. I have two internal metaphors that I follow, when it comes to my communication. Everything that will come into your life will come from a communication that you have with another human being. One analogy that I follow is that of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the difference between a strong bridge versus a weak one.

A weak bridge is needy, in the sense that it’s dependent on the other side for support. In my work, I can take someone from one side of the bridge to the other. I can save someone ten years of their life, but they’ve got to be willing to pay a toll to cross the bridge, or they can swim in shark-infested waters.

It's important to be hungry in how you train, but when you communicate with somebody in a sales context, you want to be unattached, just like the Golden Gate Bridge. That is how to master influence to make money. If there was an earthquake and the bridge broke, the bridge still has two pillars that are rooted down in the earth, underneath the ocean. Marin County and SF could crumble away, and the bridge would still stand strong and sustain itself, independent of the land.

The other analogy I use is imagining myself as a lighthouse, instead of a tugboat. They both have the same job, which is to help big ships into the port where they can be safe, but they have two very different mechanisms of action.

The tugboat goes out there with their business card and networks themselves in order to hook onto the big boat or prospect and pull them in. It can get exhausting to be a tugboat. In one day, you can only help so many people. Whereas the lighthouse helps all the boats, and it illuminates a path to safety, but it only has two jobs – to stay firmly rooted and to shine bright from within. This is how to master influence.

People live their lives one of two ways – in out or out in. If someone wants approval, they will buy a car or do something and there is a neediness to their energy, versus a successful person whose needs are completely met.

These people are whole, complete, and overflowing with abundance, joy and energy, so much so, that when they enter into a communication, it's inside out. They approve of themselves on the inside, which affects their communication on the outside. These people have learned how to master influence and be successful.

What separates outstanding performers in any industry is their psychology. They have behavioral flexibility, sensory acuity, and are flexible in their approach. It's the 80/20 rule in action.

What do you suggest that people could do in order to put themselves in an abundance mindset?

You need to be able to master your state and have systems and processes in place for doing so. Any goal that you want in life is supported by habits and rituals. What happens though is people get so attached to their daily rituals that they make it too complex to get into the state that they desire.

Similarly, people create to-do lists so that they can feel in control of their day, but when they can't keep up with it, it ends up controlling them, making them feel more stressed in the process.

We need to know that the targets that we are hitting for ourselves and our clients are always targets of emotion or a feeling that we want to create. It's all about conditioned responses. If you want to take your life or business to the next level, it involves being open to feedback. To get any result in life, you need a plan, a strategy and some support along the way.

Tony taught me about the strategy of posturing, and it was a game changer for me. Most sales trainers come off as superior. They are telling people what to do because they are taught to come across as an authority, but if you are constantly coming at that level of tonality all of the time, eventually people won't like you.

Equal is about talking to someone as a friend, and inferior involves building people up, and you really need to be able to do this if you are talking to someone who has an ego. I will change my posturing strategy, depending on which client I am talking to, but ultimately, I can't tell people what to do.

I can say to someone, “We are equal, in that we both have a desire to have a great life, but something has to change for you, doesn't it?” I build people up, I edify them, connect with them as a friend, and then give them a little nudge, all in less than 10 seconds.

It's all about catching someone's mental movie and getting them to think about what life would be like if they took a specific action. The goal is to lower someone's pain threshold and increase their action thresholds, through things like value propositions and embedded commands.

There are 3 things that prevent people from achieving success in their lives – their worldview, their self view, or their vehicle, which is the mechanism that is going to take them where they want to go in life. Oftentimes, people blame their job, their company, or their partner for why they aren't where they want to be. They discount their self view.

This is why we say 80% of success is psychology and 20% are the mechanics. There are people that run races without legs! They have been dealt a pretty crappy vehicle, but their worldview is one where they believe the world is conspiring to help them succeed, and they have a strong self view and are still climbing mountains.

What are some of the rituals that you practice, that allow you to condition your mindset and master the art of influence?

There are 3 things that I focus on before I speak in front of a group of people. The first thing is my belief system. I come from the belief that nobody shows up in my life by accident, and that there is always a reason for why I am doing something.

I remind myself why I am there, and who I am supposed to be for the people that I'm serving. My focus is always on providing value. My certainty is strong, and thats why I'm so effective when I speak, because nobody has done the thousands of hours of training that I've done, in this one context.

Secondly, I always have a clear outcome. Not just something that I want someone to do, but I'm clear in the thoughts that I want them to think, and the feelings that I want them to feel. This is how to master influence to make money.

Thirdly, I'm always hyperaware and intentional with my physiology. Oftentimes people workout because they want to look good or because they want to be healthy. When I workout, my intention is to focus on how I move and to actually feel like a badass warrior in my own body. Physiology affects your emotional state, so I know that, if I want to have a powerful presence in front of people, I need to feel physically strong and energetic.

When it comes my morning ritual, I have a checklist that I follow – I jump on my rebounder, I take supplements, drink water with apple cider vinegar, do some meditation and breath work, and I review my goals for the day ahead.

When it comes to I follow the phrase, be, do, have. In order for me to have things, what do I need to do, and in order for me to do these things, who do I need to be? As a whole, self-development is big on goal-setting, which is having and being, but it's light on the doing piece. I write out a list of character traits and habits that I need to accomplish in a day, and I rate myself, on a scale of 1 to 10. At the end of the day, I ask myself, “How well did I fulfil each habit?”

I hope my interview with master influencer, Eli Wilde, has helped shed light on how to master influence.

Welcome to part 2 of my experiencing Ethiopia vlog adventures! If you haven’t yet watched my Ethiopia School Inauguration vlog, make sure you check it out. It was one of the most profound experiences of my life.

Experiencing Ethiopia took us out of our element and into the world of those who are less fortunate than ourselves, allowing us to open our minds and our hearts to new customs, cultures, and ways of life.

I have witnessed the transformative and healing power of travel, especially when it has involved visiting countries that have been far different from my own. This is supported by ample research that suggests that traveling is highly beneficial for your physical, mental and emotional health.

I am grateful that I am able to share my Ethiopia experience with you. In my eyes, moments like these is what makes life worth living – contributing and giving beyond yourself, with the goal of making a difference in the world. In the words of Ibn Battuta, Traveling. It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” Are you ready to learn about my life-changing trip experiencing Ethiopia?

After spending time in Dubai, Tatiana and I traveled to Addis Ababa, which is the capital of Ethiopia. Known as Africa’s political center, this city is a busy hub of economic, social and political activity. It has a rich cultural history, which is reflected in the myriad of churches, museums and mosques that are spread throughout the city.

From Addis Ababa, we jumped on a domestic flight to Mek'ele, which is the capital of the Tigray Region, and the largest city in northern Ethiopia. Today, Mek’ele is one of the main economic and educational centres in Ethiopia. While there, we stayed at a lodge in a remote location, amidst a beautiful backdrop of mountainous desert views.

While there, we got to experience an epic 3-hour trekking experience to the top of the Gheralta Mountain, where we visited a famous church called, Abuna Yemata. You could literally feel the history of the place as you walked through it. To add to that, the views at the top of the mountain were breathtaking. We also got to visit some markets in the villages, where we were able to interact with the locals and experience their daily way of life.

Experiencing Ethiopia filled my heart with gratitude. In the Western world we take so many things for granted. You don’t realize how fortunate you are to live the life that you live until you travel to places like Ethiopia, where people live with so little.

I hope I have inspired you to contribute more. Once you are able to shift from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance, I promise that you will experience the highest form of fulfillment in life. Let’s make a difference together and help to create a better life for others.

Ethel Percy Andrus said it best – Human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly life.” How can you make a difference in the world while traveling?
